Scratch-off Secret #2

BEWARE OF THE REPRINT!!!

TYPES OF REPRINTS:

We have identified several types of REPRINTS across all of the US lotteries.  Heres an explanation of each, the states that have implemented each one, and most importantly – how we handle them to help you ScratchSmarter!

  • Reprinting the exact same game name & game number!  These are sometimes easily identified on your state’s lottery website by an ASTERISK(*) or a note, indicating that the game has been reprinted.  Other times, these are not easily identified – just one day, the total number of prizes available or prizes remaining suddenly increases.
    • HOW WE HANDLE IT: Our database has a trigger that signals when prizes remaining INCREASES or when this type of reprint occurs – we AUTOMATICALLY downrate the game in our SmartFactor rating until top prizes from the second printing become possible to win!
  • Reprinting the same game name but a different game number!  Sales of a specific game for the lottery are really good and that game is out of top prizes.  Instead of creating a new game with a new identity, they create the exact same game, but give it a new game number and maybe a different color in the graphics.  Players quickly look at the website and see the game name with top prizes remaining – but end up buying the OLD game with NO TOP prizes left!
    • HOW WE HANDLE IT:
      • For most states, where the data for each game number is published differently, and we can analyze each game: we mark any duplicate game names on our reports with an ASTERISK(*) – noting the customer to be aware to buy ONLY THE RIGHT GAME WITH THE RIGHT GAME NUMBER!
      • For New York state – NY State lottery does not publish separate prizes remaining data for their reprints  (even for our Freedom of Information requests).  In other words, all of the reprinted game data is muddied together, so we automatically DOWNGRADE all of these games to “YELLOW” and reduce their SmartFactor rating.  It isn’t worth playing any NY lottery reprinted game when data cannot be used to analyze these games.  They produce too many other games where analysis can be applied to help our subscribers!
  • Using the same game number across different game names. This one is really odd, and we’ve only seen it happen once ins Colorado.  It looks like they were marketing the same game in different ways ( maybe as a marketing test to see which game name sold better), but all of the info for the game was consolidated under the same game number.
    • HOW WE HANDLE IT: Both game names appear in the game name field and are joined with the same game number.  So, if the game number is ranked high by our SmartFactor, you’re safe to play either game name.

TEXT FROM THE VIDEO:

Our secrets have 5 key players you need to know about. There is the lottery commission, the scratch card printing company, the lottery warehouse, retailers, and of course, the lottery players, just like you.

This secret is about how the lottery commission works with the printer and the warehouse to distribute tickets.

The lottery commission will design and create games using different game elements like the price of the ticket, total number of tickets to be printed and the prize amounts to give away. They plan on getting the highest return possible on every game they create.

When the game design is done, they send it to a secure printer to randomly print the tickets with prizes hidden throughout the printing.

Random printing, at a secure printer, keeps the game fair for everyone buying tickets.

NO ONE knows where the big prizes are!

But random printing creates risk for the lottery because all of the top prizes could be grouped at the front of the print job.

When the printing is done, it is shipped to the lottery warehouse. To ensure that the randomness is maintained, they store it and ship it in the exact

order it was printed.

The warehouse picks packs of games to ship to retailers from the beginning of the

printing first. Now, here’s the risk!

Lottery players are checking the website to see if there are top prizes left. If those top prizes were all sold at the beginning of the printing, people stop buying the tickets and the games’ sales dry up.

The lottery commission will lose money on these games instead of making a profit.

So, they have invented: the reprint!

When reprinting a game, the lottery doubles the number of tickets printed and doubles the number of prizes available. A new set of randomly printed tickets is printed.

But when these games are shipped to the warehouse, they go into inventory behind the first printing of the game.

And the warehouse continues to pull tickets from the first printing before the second printing.

Lottery players who check the website see that there are top prizes available, so they buy the game.

You might as well burn your money because there is no chance of winning a top prize before all of the tickets from the first printing have sold!

Don’t let the lottery trick you out of your money! Keep a close eye on their website to see when top prizes INCREASE!
