Scratch-off Secret #5

THE DEVIL’S IN THE DETAILS!

TEXT FROM THE VIDEO:

Lotteries publish a lot of data about scratch-off games. It’s common for people to use “Overall Odds” or “Top prizes remaining” to pick which games to play.

Let’s look closely at these different options starting with overall odds.

Let’s compare two different $2 dollar games for sale. One has overall odds of 1 in 4. The other has overall odds of 1 in 6.

If ‘overall odds’ is all you know, then you should definitely play the first game!

Now let’s look at the same two games using only “Top Prizes remaining” information.

If the first game has NO top prizes remaining and the second game has 4 remaining, you should play the second game!

Of course, if you don’t care about winning a big prize, you should just use overall odds to pick your games. But who wants to win just any prize!?!

The truth is this information is very limited. ‘Overall odds’ is useful if you just want to win any prize.

But “Top prizes remaining” is only good to tell you which games to avoid when there are no prizes left! It doesn’t tell you anything when there is even ONE top prize remaining on multiple games.

Why?

This is where the devil is in the details!

Let’s say you have two games where the odds are the same, but one has 4 top prizes left and the other has 3.

Which do you play?

You can’t tell without knowing more details!

The only way to answer this is to know how many tickets are remaining for each game!

If there are ten thousand tickets left for the first game and only one thousand tickets left for the second game, the odds of winning a top prize are WAY better with the second game!

Wouldn’t you rather improve your chances of winning a big prize? Well, you can! It just takes some work!

Go to your state lottery website section for scratch-off games. For each game, gather the total number of tickets printed.

Then add up all of the detailed prizes printed for all prize levels on each game.

Finally, go back to the website every day and add up the prizes remaining for every game.

Then, compare all prizes remaining to the total number of prizes printed!

This will give you the estimated percentage of tickets sold for every game!
